Troubleshooting your widgets

Obsidian × Indify – FAQ

Q: The hover menu’s “customize” button doesn’t work in my embedded widget. Why not?

In Obsidian, you’ll need to Control + click (or Command + click on Mac) when clicking the “customize” button.

Q: Can I embed Indify widgets into my Obsidian notes?

Yes, as long as you’re comfortable using HTML in your notes. Obsidian supports embedding external web pages via the <iframe> HTML element, which can display Indify widgets by URL.

Q: How do I embed an Indify widget in an Obsidian note?

Follow the steps below to get started:
  1. Create your widget on Indify and copy its widget URL.
  2. In Obsidian, open or create the note where you want the widget.
  3. Add an HTML block like:
  4. <iframesrc="YOUR_INDIFY_WIDGET_URL"
      width="100%"
      height="400"
      frameborder="0">
    </iframe>
  5. Press Enter or click away to see the iframe render.

Q: The iframe code is showing as text instead of an embed. Why?

Try the following steps to resolve this issue:
  • Try clicking away or pressing Enter, so that your cursor is no longer focused on the iframe code.
  • Check that HTML rendering isn’t disabled by another plugin or a strict security setting.

Obsidian’s official docs show that iframe HTML is supported in normal usage for web embeds.

Q: Do Indify widgets work offline in Obsidian?

No. Indify widgets are loaded from the web via HTTPS. If you’re offline or blocked by a firewall, the iframe will appear blank or show an error until your connection is restored.

Q: Are there Obsidian plugins related to widgets, and do I need them?

There are community plugins like “Widgets” that add local and custom widgets to your notes, separate from Indify. They’re optional—Indify relies only on standard iframe embeds, so you don’t need a plugin to use it.

Q: Will Indify widgets affect the performance of my Obsidian vault?

Inside a single note, a few embeds are usually fine. But many iframe widgets in one note can slow down rendering, especially when switching into Reading view. It’s best to keep heavy widgets in dedicated dashboard notes instead of every note.

Q: Is it safe to embed external content like Indify in Obsidian?

Obsidian will load whatever the iframe URL returns, so you should only embed sources you trust. Indify uses standard HTTPS and is designed for embedding in productivity tools, but as with any third-party embed, you should avoid exposing sensitive data in public widgets.
